Archbishop Charles Halpin from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, along with his friend Bishop Sergio Mendes from Mexico, created CED (Center for encounters and dialogue) . Both Bishops wanted an organization that could provide support from Canada for the people of the Diocese of Cuernavaca. These groups work together to create an opportunity for the people of Cuernavaca to build a sustainable economy for themselves and their future children. Since 1989, CED has worked to start an artist's cooperative, build kitchens in schools and communities for abandoned children, build day cares, soup kitchens, food banks, and education for women. There are no community issues CED has not tackled. Currently, a school is being built to educate the local community in agriculture, carpentry, building, and metal working to prevent future generations from falling into the poverty cycle of joining gangs and migrating to the United States. Since 1991 the Cuernavaca Project in Regina has been taking groups of teens and adults to Mexico to participate in these projects. This has been a life changing experience for all who have participated!

Since 1991, the Cuernavaca Project in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada has been taking groups of teens and adults to Mexico. There, they participate in projects to improve the standard of living for the people through community development projects that create self sustainability. For example, they teach organic farming, build water tanks, and dry toilets. With the opening of a market stall the hopes are to allow them to educate their children in agriculture and prevent future generations from falling into the poverty cycle of joining gangs or migrating to the United States. These projects have moved the village from poverty to self sustainability. Currently, work is being done to build a school to educate the community In agriculture, carpentry, and metalworking. However, there is still work to do, and you can help us make a difference!

"Randy and I have a passion for the people of Hueyapan and those who lead the project in Mexico. We have built friendships in the families there. Each time we arrive and as soon as our feet are upon ‘The Land’, as we call it, we feel like we are at home away from home. We don’t have the comforts of home when we are there, but we have the comforts of the people who share so much with so little. "
Our Thalia has been helping with the Cuernavaca project most of her life! She recently won an award for her dedication and hard work! The following is part of
a letter from the Saskatchewan Provincial Council of the Catholic Woman's League of Canada:
"Dear Thalia,
On behalf of the Saskatchewan Provincial Council of the Catholic Woman's League of Canada, I would like to congratulate you on being chosen for this prestigious award. Your Selfless dedication and commitment to helping improve the lives of the people in Hueyapan, Mexico, through the Cuernavaca Project, makes you a very deserving recipient."
'I was involved in the Cuernavaca Project once when I was 15 years old and again when I was 19 years old. When I went at 15, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I had no real goals. At that time, I knew I wanted to help others, but didn’t really know what that meant for me. Being involved in this project at 15 opened my eyes to the world. Going to Mexico at 15, when I had never been anywhere else was truly life changing. I left Cuernavaca at 15 completely aware of who I was, and this experience instilled in me a passion to help others. I had seen the trauma, the struggle, the addiction, the devastation of poverty and knew that I needed to make a change. When I was 17, I was accepted into Social Work at the University of Regina and at 32 still fight to make that change I so desperately want to see!'
